⛳️ Cobra Aerojet Max Mini Review

Merry Christmas!

Hey fellow golfer, welcome to the Friday edition of the Red Birdie Golf newsletter, here’s what we got for you today:

FRIDAY GOLF TIP

Putting Backspin On Your Approach (Lee Trevino’s Tips)

While golf instruction has changed greatly over the years, there are some things that don’t.

A “Golf Magazine” article from 1985 featured Lee Trevino giving tips on how to put spin on your approach shots.

That timeless lesson is something we can still learn from today.

  1. Setup. Play the ball closer to your right foot to shorten your takeaway and promote a steeper swing slope. Experiment on the range to find out the optimal ball placement for your swing.

  2. ¾ Swing. If you go back more than ¾ of a swing, your wrists overcock and your swing flattens.

  3. Downswing Trap. If you keep your backswing upright and keep a steep slope, you can then swing down on the ball and trap it against the club face. It is this action that produces the backspin every player wants to see on an approach to the green.

COURSE OF THE WEEK

Whispering Pines Golf Club

Annually voted either the best or one of the best golf courses in Texas, Whispering Pines is a Chet Williams designed course located in Trinity, Texas.

It has been on the Golf Digest “Top 100 Courses” list since 2013 and in the top-5 in Texas since that year as well.

The bunkers and contours of the greens are the most notable feature on this course.

The course is quiet and remote, and many of the golfers who play there come for multiple days and stay at one of the 4 cottages available for rental by the 160 members of the club.

The final six holes of the course winds through Coney Creek, an offshoot of Lake Livingston.

This creek is gator infested, so keep your eyes open and enjoy the incredible scenery.

NEW GEAR MINI REVIEW

The Cobra Aerojet Max is a long, forgiving, and straight driver, but the reason we are reviewing it now is because there are rumors of a new Cobra driver coming out early in 2024.

The Cobra Dark Speed is already getting some press coverage, so we figured we should review the Aerojet since you might be able to find it on clearance next year.

The Cobra Aerojet Max has maintained Cobra’s maximum simplicity, aerodynamics, and ultra light weight to produce some of the highest swing speeds of any driver on the market.

The aerodynamic design cuts through the air better than most drivers you will find.

That design, coupled with the light weight, will help you swing this club faster than most without even trying.

In addition, the Aerojet Max uses a clubface that wraps around the sole and features 15 separately designed “hot areas” that are designed to send the ball off at high speeds.

Those hot areas help to give you distance and accuracy even if you miss the center of the club face. Inside the sole of the club, there is a weight bar that lowers the center of gravity for a higher launch while simultaneously creating extra stability for a straighter ball flight.

If it is clubhead speed and ball speed you are looking for, the Aerojet Max is a great option.

Pros

  • Long, light, and straight…pretty much what every beginner is looking for in a driver.

  • An inexpensive option compared to similarly performing drivers.

  • It is a simple, “grip it and rip it” type of driver that gives you confidence when you stand over the ball and gives you a straight ball flight.

  • It looks and feels great in your hands.

Cons

  • Not as technologically advanced as some other top-end clubs.

  • Workability is difficult because of the lack of spin produced.

Until Monday!
