⛳️ Titleist Vokey SM9 Wedges Mini Review
An update to a classic
Hey fellow golfer, welcome to the Friday edition of the Red Birdie Golf newsletter, here’s what we got for you today:
FRIDAY GOLF TIP
Playing in the Rain
Golf is a tough sport. It is mentally exhausting and can be very frustrating at times as well.
Add rain into the mix and it becomes a whole different monster.
Whether you are playing a tournament and rain comes in or it was the only Saturday you could play and you weren’t going to let rain stop you, here are two tips from an old golf pro about playing in the rain:
Bring enough dry towels, and then after you have packed the number you need, double it.
Do not give up. Standing out in the rain is not fun under any circumstances, and it is enough to take your mind off what you are doing and move on to the next thing. Keep your focus on golf and do not give up.
COURSE OF THE WEEK
Royal Melbourne (West)
In an attempt to not leave Australia out in our “course of the week” section, today we highlight Royal Melbourne (West) which is located in, of course, Melbourne, Australia.
This is one of the most well-known and finest golf courses in the world.
It took more than 4 years to construct this course, and that is noticeable in some places as the course has some different design and layouts throughout.
Hole 6 at Royal Melbourne West has maybe the most famous and treacherous dogleg right of any course in the world.
It wraps right around a huge area of native foliage onto a finely manicured and ultra fast green.
The bunkers around the green are steep and the sand is fine, so you do not want to be short here.
The allure to this course is its signature holes, natural beauty, and great design.
NEW GEAR MINI REVIEW
The Titleist Vokey SM9 wedges look great and perform even better.
They come in lost from 46-degrees to 62-degrees with six different grind options and five different finishes.
These wedges were designed by legendary craftsman Bob Vokey, and you can see his influence throughout the club’s features.
One of the most unique characteristics is the progressive center of gravity found in these wedges.
The higher the loft, the higher the center of gravity which provides some of the best trajectory and distance control on the market.
This difference in center of gravity was achieved by adding weight to the back of the toe, and that weight is not visible at address so you get the same clean view at setup.
They are perfectly weighted and designed so that you get maximum distance and a high launch even at lower swing speeds.
The spin milled grooves provide a ton of friction so that the ball can stop on a dime.
The Vokey wedges are some of the best out there.
Pros
They look and feel great from the first touch and perform even better.
These wedges produce a ton of backspin and increased feel around the green because of the milled grooves.
They are weighted and designed well for full wedge shots as well as chipping around the green.
The progressive center of gravity provides some of the best trajectory and distance control on the market.
Cons
It is a pure blade design with a smaller head makes it less forgiving and easier to mishit than some of the other wedges out there.
Made for more experienced golfers and they can be more difficult to hit and control for beginners and high handicappers.
Until Monday!
